The Next Tree

where is it wind comes from 

we count days and nights passing 

inside poppy seeds 

a huge snowstorm spreads 

that lie a certain flow of air tells 

a mailbox wakes 

letters already meaning something else 

the road leads somewhere beyond history 

we shepherd old memories out

and hitch them to the next tree

come, you barbarians

please join this legend 

this moment reserved in advance blooms 

humble flames 

becoming a tiger in a foreign land 

we" ve traveled everywhere 

always setting out from the next tree 

and returning, just to name 

that sorrow of the road

北岛：原名赵振开，1949年生于北京，1978年和朋友在北京创办文学杂志《今天》。自1987年起，在欧美及香港多所大学教书或任驻校作家，其作品被译成30种文字，曾获瑞典笔会文学奖、美国古根汉奖、马其顿斯特鲁加国际诗歌节最高荣誉金花环奖等，获选美国艺术文学院终身荣誉院士。2009年创办亚洲最具影响力的国际诗歌活动——香港国际诗歌之夜，2018年创办香港诗歌节基金会。

Bei Dao:whose original name is Zhao Zhenkai, was born in Beijing in 1949. In 1978, he founded the literary magazine Jintian (lit.: "Today") with friends in Beijing. Since 1987, he has been teaching in many universities in Europe, America, and Hong Kong. His work has been translated into 30 languages. He is the Honorary Doctorate at Brown University, Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Art at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Bei Dao was awarded the PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award, the Swedish PEN Literature Prize, the American Guggenheim Prize, and the highest honor of Golden Wreath Prize of the Macedonian Struga International Poetry Festival. He is an Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2009, Bei Dao founded the International Poetry Nights in Hong Kong, currently the most influential international poetry festival in Asia. He founded the Hong Kong Poetry Festival Foundation in 2018.
